Hollywood Still in The Mindset of "The Talkies": Apple Denies Screen Capture Whilst the DVD Player Is Active
You know, Hollywood needs to grow up. I was working whilst watching a DVD and attempted to capture a BROWSER via OSX's key sequence ( 
) screen capture. I was in the middle of writing a technical document and OSX politely denied me that "Screen Grabs Are Unavailble During DVD Playback." As you can see below:
Iwas not trying to capture the DVD viewer as this was on the other screen. I was again trying to capture a portion of a UI in a browser. Now, the first thought that came to mind is Apple trying to make the playing field even for the PC? ;-) Then I got a hold of myself and realized the announcement of this action was diabolical! You mean I can't SCREEN GRAB because ITUNE/IPHONE/IPOD/TOUCH/COMPUTER can be used to copy sequences of a movie.. Yikes, that stops workflow. Even with DVDs that I OWN... Apple has stopped SCREEN GRABS.
What if I have video of a family member and would like to screen grab it? Well, apparently Steve had to prove to Hollywood that a user can't screen grab in order to get his video cash cow going. I agree, you have to protect artists product, but for crying out loud, Im not screen grabbing and making money on the DVD's nor do I intend to and furthermore, I wanted to copy an USER INTERFACE and put it into a document. Oh, by the way, I created the user interface. Thusly, it hurts, impedes my workflow.
Apple, this was a bad idea!
By the WAY, other DVD players, such as VLC do not subscribe to this philosophy as well as many others. Open Source solves most of this my current problem.... But Apple should not have crippled Screen Capture's in this manner. They could have DENIED screen capture of the DVDPlayer at the very least. Denial during its operation is a bad idea.
It's a shame Apple decided to degrade their operating system to such trivial minded securities.
Hollywood needs to understand if its ANALOG it can not be protected. Most importantly, people will pay for the movie DVD, soundtrack CD screen grab denial is not going to make the industry recover Hollywood's perceived losses. In fact, if you could screen grab a still of a movie it would turn into a SOCIAL NETWORKING "Check This Out" sort-a-thing. That could be viral os that not what they are atempting to do with their blogs?
Alas, Hollywood still thinks as it did during the Talkies, eh!?!.
